Income Equality Gaps

Income Inequality

Some of the article (from Time Magazine 1/9/12 issue) got cut out, but the gist of the article can be “read” within the pictures. In the last 20 years the gaps in income have increased dramatically. It is no surprise that the highest areas with income gaps are also the areas with the largest metropolitan cities, i.e. California, New York, Florida. In these states the large cities are the contributing factor to the large dispartity. These cities also have a high concentration of gentrification. I have already discussed (in a previous post) that I have conflicting opinions re gentrification, but the more and more I look into the issue I am finding myself on the “against” side of gentrification. On the surface gentrification looks good… but when you look closer you realize that gentrification is responsible (in part, it cannot take sole blame) for increasing the gaps in income equality. Gentrification pushes low and low-middle income families out of an area allowing for high-middle and high income families to move in, thus increasing the gap in income. If you have ever traveled to Manhattan, you can readily see that the metropolis is becoming more and more for the rich. It is very costly to live in the heart of Manhattan with studio apartments in some areas starting at $2,000 a month. A STUDIO.

Maybe these are just my thoughts, but I can’t see how that could be so. While I do believe that shifts in society are inevitable and even necessary for a country to continue to be at the forefront of business, economy, and power EVERYTHING cannot change. Manufacturing, thankfully, is taking a turn and becoming more relevant in our society again. This is likely do to people buying into the “Made from America” trend. But this is good. Outsourcing to other countries has provided other places with advancement and even a more stable economy, but it has damaged our own. Hopefully with the blue collar jobs on the rise the dispartity in the income gaps will decrease slightly.

What are your thoughts? What do you believe are some of the contributing factors of the gaps in income? I know there are many more factors than the few I have listed, but to include them all would be to write a book.

  1. Where to begin? Capitalism is a creep dressed in a white man’s face. Yes I said it, bit let’s look at a contributing factor to the notion of outsourcing and economc gaps in urban
and large metropolitan cities. The goal of the capitalist is to gain profit with little overhead to worry about and keeping labor costs down to get more in return. Capitalist have turned this country upside down and its own way has taken after the British with it’s own conquer and divide tatic. I believe anyone who has lived in this country for the past 20 years can say that there has been an increase in Mexican immigrant population, we can conclude that there must be an abundance in job opportunities here than in Mexico? Bit how could this be when our country is sliding deeper into a recession? Outsourcing is not just happening overseas, it is happening on our own soil. I love the fact that Mexicans have been able to find employment here, but I am disgusted by the way it is going down. Capitalist have been hiring “cheap” help and giving these immigrants work but at the lowest rate possible and I am sure below minimum wage due to the fact that many are illegal. By doing so many white and black us collar workers are complaining that Mexicans have been stealing their jobs. No they haven’t! Mexicans are not in the position of creating jobs, the wealthy capitalist are!!! From this dynamic spawns hatred and blind racism. Mexicans are now public enemy number one and capitalists have slipped under the radar. Then we have politicians (tea party) going after Mexicans like they are infiltrating our country like a plague and disrupting our economy. Smoke screen alert!!!! Just like the yellow cake scandal and weapons of mass destruction. We need to wake up! Recognize the source of our problems in this country! These poor Mexicans are doing the worst jobs, under the worst circumstances and getting pennies for their efforts. Of course they will take the work we would never stand for being paid so cheaply. These people have no one fighting for their rights. This all starts a domino effect that hurts everyone!!! Employers hiring inexpensive help, lack of employment for American blue collar residents, resentment, rage and racism among minorities and lower to middle class whites, an ever growing gap between the social classes, drops in spending, crime, racial targeting and the list can go on. I am not saying this is the primary cause to the nation’s problems, but I will say that it is a huge problem. We need to unite and target the real problem the greedy capitalists. We need to force them to pay and employ fairly, offering health insurance and the right wages. The system is taking advantage of us (Americans), the large latino immigrant population and the opportunity for all to partake in a fair economy. Futures are hard to be planned when employment is in question. Minorities are always going to have problems as long as the fat cat white capitalists continue to play unfairly.
